CULTURAL
AND SPORTS EVENTS IN BELGRADE
The city that hosted many Europe's representatives
for the well-known music competition, the Eurovision
in 2008, and also was the host of Universidad
in 2009, has a very important place on the map
of the world's cultural and sports centres.
Belgrade is the cultural, art and sports centre
of Serbia. More then 9000 theatre plays, art
exhibitions, concerts, performances and other
artistic programs of domestic and foreign authors
take place in our city every year. The city
of Belgrade has established 11of the biggest
cultural manifestations in the city. Also, the
city of Belgrade helps in organizing another
38 smaller cultural events, which is performing
once a year.
FEST - The International film festival
|
Since their
beginning in 1971, this festival takes
place from last Friday in February till
the first week in March, offering fantastic
enjoyment to all visitors and admirers
of seventh art. The festival presents
the top of film achievements in the world
of cinematography, that is the participants
and winners of others festivals. If you,
like many of Belgrade citizens, decide
to see films shown during this festival,
you should buy tickets as soon as possible
and maybe even then you would wait in
line for them.

Belgrade documentary and
short film festival
|
The
festival was founded in 1959 as The Festival
of Yugoslav documentary and short film.
This international film competition of
art achievements in the field of documentary
and short film, recorded with film or
video (electronic) technique, takes place
every year in the last week of March.
The national competitive program has four
categories: documentaries, animation films,
short films and experimental films, while
international competitive program is not
categorized. Belgrade film festival of
documentary and short film has 15 official
film awards: for life's work, best directors
(of reach film category a separate award),
best production, best camera, best animation,
best movie montage, and the best film
music.

Sopot Film
festival
|
This festival,
founded in 1972, had the name ’Slobodarske
filmske svecanosti’ (“The
liberalistic film festival”), presenting
films with the thematic of freedom and
humanism. Following the socio-economic
changes that happened in last decade of
20th century, this festival was renamed
to “Sopot film festival” transforming
its character from international to competitive
festival of national film production.
The festival takes place in the first
part of July in the Sopot Culture centre.

BITEF –
Belgrade international theatre festival
|
Founded in
1967, during the 14 years of its existence
BITEF became one of the 5 largest and
most important European theatre festivals,
and one of the few festivals that equally
present experimental form and classical
achievements. BITEF is international and
competitive in character, and takes place
in Sava Centre, Belgrade theatres and
other city locations in September.

BEMUS –
Belgrade music festival
|
This international
music festival was founded in 1969 with
the goal to present the classical national
and international soloists and music groups,
as well as ethno and contemporary music.
In the first half on October, for about
15 days BEMUS allows music admires to enjoy
concerts in Sava Center, the Ilija M. Kolarac
Foundation, and other Belgrade concert halls.

The International
music youth competition
|
Since 1969
the musicians younger than 30 years compete
on this manifestation in the following
categories: solo singing, composition,
instrumental solo and chamber orchestra.
The international music youth competition
takes place every year in second half
of March and is organizes by The Musical
youth of Belgrade.

Belgrade
jazz festival
|
The first
Belgrade jazz festival was opened in October
10th 1971 by one of the world’s
most popular jazz musician of all times
- Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. During
the next years festival welcomed many
of great names of jazz: Dizzy Gillespie,
Sonny Stitt, The Weather Report band,
Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Paquito D’Rivera,
Korni grupa, Dusko Gojkovic and many others.
Festival takes place at the end of October.
Many national and international jazz musicians
are presented in the halls of Dom omladine,
Dom Sindikata, Kolarc foundation, etc.

BELEF – Belgrade summer festival

The international
summer festival unites three art domains:
scene art (theatre and dance), visual
art (video art, installations, performances
and prints) and music. During July and
August many of Belgrade locations: the
Kalemegdan fortress, Ada ciganlija, streets,
squares, parks, the Sava and the Dunube
river banks, theatres and other city locations
become stages for the national and international
art performances

Joy of Europe - The international
Europe children’s meeting
|
Since
1969, during one week in October, Belgrade
heartily accepts children between 7 and
14 from many European countries. They present
their music, theatre and art accomplishments.
This manifestation provides busy social
life filled with games, fun and miscellaneous
creative activities in The Children’s
Cultural Centre, the Sava Centre, art galleries
and Ada ciganlija.

October Salon
The October
Salon was funded in 1960 as an important
national manifestation for the authors
in field of art, applied art and design.
Since 2005 this oldest and most important
art manifestation in Belgrade became international.
Every October, for whole 25 days you can
see exhibition of October salon in the
“Cvijeta Zuzoric” art pavilion,
art galleries of ULUS, Art Academy, Pedagogy
museum, Youth Centre of Belgrade, Graphic
faculty and others exhibition locations.

Belgrade book fair
|
The first
Yugoslav book fairs were in Zagreb in
1956, and in 1957 the fair moved to Belgrade.
Since then this international book fair
occurs at the end of the year in the halls
of Belgrade fair. Belgrade book fair is
an international manifestation that gets
together many publishers and bookstores.
Every year it promotes a different country,
that year’s official fair guest.

SPORT
Serbia has always
been well known for its basketball, volleyball,
water polo, football, handball players etc...
Since recently Belgrade is proud to have new stars
of World tennis – Novak Djokovic, Jelena
Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic.
The first basketball game was played in Belgrade
in 1923. From that time, our basketball national
team won gold medals at every competition in the
world (some of them even several times).
Belgrade was the host of many world, European
and Balkan championships.
Every year Belgrade hosts the biggest
Serbian sport manifestation, the Belgrade marathon.
The first Belgrade marathon took place in 1988
at a 23 kilometres long trace and with Serbian
athletes only. Next year, running trace was two
times longer (46.7 km) and there were a few athletes
from other countries. Besides the marathon, the
main race for the best-prepared competitors, the
Belgrade marathon also has the Marathon for Children
(for the youngest runners), The Pleasure race
(event with the biggest number of participants)
and half marathon. Significance of this very serious
athletic manifestation was shown in 2006, when
Carl Louis, one of the best world sportsmen, opened
the Belgrade marathon.

There are about 1000 sport halls in Belgrade,
equipped for all sports and for every
competition level so that our city has
the necessary technical elements for the
organization of the Olympic games.
The city has eight stadiums. The most
popular is FC” Red Star” stadium
called “Marakana”, the biggest
complex for football and athletics. The
stadium wass built in 1965 with capacity
for almost 60.000 visitors. Many international
competitions were held on this stadium.
The most popular and the most frequent
football matches, called “the eternal
derby”, are between two Belgrade
most popular football clubs FC”
Red Star” and FC “Partizan”.
“The eternal derby” is also
a competition among passionate fans: Red
Stars “Delije” and Partizans
“Grobari”.
The biggest and the best-equipped sports
hall in Belgrade is the Belgrade Arena,
built in 2004. The model for the arena
is the United Centre in Chicago. This
sports hall has 48.000 square km, receives
20.000 visitors and is suitable for all
sports competitions: basketball, handball,
volleyball, tennis, gymnastic, athletics,
wrestling, judo, and sports on the ice
are also a possibility. The European basketball
championship was held in this modern hall
in 2005.

A special oasis of nature,
sports and recreation is Ada Ciganlija.
With 50 sports fields, Ada Ciganlija is
the largest sports centre in Belgrade.
The lake is suitable for swimming, watercraft,
kayak, water polo, water jumps, board
soaring and others sports, and due to
that it has been the location of several
world and national championships. There
is running trace, trace for roller-skates
and bicycle around the lake (8 km long).
One can also find sections for: football,
tennis, handball, volleyball, basketball,
golf, baseball, rugby, hockey on grass,
volleyball on sand, aqua soccer and water
sky. If, after all these activities, you
still have energy, you can try extreme
sports like bungee jumping, free climbing
or paintball. Fishing fans may try their
luck on Ada Safari lake, built in 1994.
Lake is around 6 ha big and is a habitat
of fishes like carp, grass fish and silver
crap and tench.

The sports
and recreation Centre “Tasmajdan”
is the largest sports centre in the country,
consisting of a stadium, outdoor and indoor
Olympic swimming pools, the "Pioneer"
hall and its ice-hall. The First World
championship in swimming, art swimming,
water jumping was held in “Tasmajdan”.
The First Water Polo World Championship
– FINA cup and the First women handball
championship were also held here. This
sport centre holds the record in the number
of world records accomplished in one swimming
competition.

BG sports centre Kovilovo
is a 26 ha big complex of sports halls:
shooting-range and sporting compact shooting
ground, sports halls for football, handball,
volleyball and basketball, fitness centre
and outdoor swimming pool, outdoor terrains
for so called small sports, running and
walking tracks. In 2005 European shooting
championship and ISSF WORLD CUP was organized
in this sports centre.

There are eight stadiums, 12 sports centres,
six sports halls, tree bicycles tracks,
15 hunting fields, a hippodrome, many
wellness and fitness centres, and other
sport facilities. You just have to decide
which sport you want take, and Belgrade
will not disappoint you. And if you get
top-level results, be sure that Belgrade
citizens are the most faithful audience,
always willing to organize you a warm
welcome, just as they already do for basketball,
volleyball water polo, tennis and all
other sportsman.
